Mala beads, commonly known as a japa mala or simply a mala, are a type of prayer beads. Prayer beads have been used for centuries by a range of religions, from Hinduism to Catholicism. Today, they're sometimes used as a mindfulness aid without any religious affiliation. They traditionally include 108 beads in addition to a guru bead, which is larger than the rest of the beads and often has a tassel.
Mala beads can help you with different aspects of meditation, which is linked to a range of health benefits. Meditation can help reduce stress levels, improve sleep, & lower blood pressure, among other things.
But meditation isn’t always easy. Many people find it hard, especially in the beginning, to keep their mind from wandering off. That’s where mala beads come in.
Mala beads “have the purpose of keeping you focused during meditation,” says Lena Schmidt, a certified yoga instructor.
Schmidt explains two ways a mala can help make meditation easier:
✨ The repetitive movement of your fingers across the beads helps ground you.
✨ Touching each bead as you say a mantra helps you keep track of how many times you’ve repeated the mantra.
"The Yang" mala is designed to help you nurture your masculine side. The Chinese yin/yang symbol reminds us that there are opposing & balancing forces in everything - dark/light, good/evil, sun/moon, hot/cold etc. We cannot have one without the other.
💗 Rhodonite is a stone of healing for your spiritual & physical wounds. It helps to cultivate forgiveness & compassion. Promotes mutual understanding.
🖤💙 Labradorite aids in spiritual reflection & truth. It sharpens intuition, gives emotional depth & mediumistic abilities. It brings forgotten memories to light & helps you to recognise illusions.
It's beneficial to 'cleanse' your crystal when you receive it/them. You can do this in a variety of ways; using sage, palo santo, running water (preferably spring water), moonlight or sunlight, just be sure to check your crystals are suitable in water & sunlight, as some are not. I recommend cleansing your crystals at least once a month. If your crystal has been 'active' a lot, or appears hot, cleanse more regularly. Over time, you will just know! You build a little relationship with your crystals, they are like little friends!
Crystals contain energy & natural vibrations, dependent on when, where & how they were made in the world. You don’t technically have to do anything to benefit from crystals. It is beneficial if you love them & care for them, this is pretty simple though 😊 you can start by cleansing them with sage every week to release any toxic or negative energies, or you can simply get them out on a full moon & cleanse & charge them in the moonlight 🌙
